Recognizing Needs: Behaviors and Strategies in the Classroom Everyone has needs: teachers, administrators…even students. When those needs are unmet, challenges emerge! Participants in this session will learn how the most challenging of behaviors are often motivated by very understandable needs. Changing how we approach these behaviors allows us to connect with our students-- and their needs-- in more compassionate ways, encouraging a more positive and productive classroom environment and harnessing the power of de-escalation! Mindfulness 101: A Brief Introduction Participants in this session will learn about mindfulness-what it is, why it works, and how to incorporate easy exercises into the school day. Teachers will gain accessible information into the science behind mindfulness and how it can help with self-regulation--for our students and, most importantly, ourselves. |

Todd Scholl An Introduction to Mindfulness In Education
Abstract: Teaching is stressful. From the stresses of duty to the larger stresses of school violence, educators are under pressure. Many outstanding teachers leave the profession within their first five years. Those that remain in teaching can easily become burned out. Mindfulness is a free, easy, and secular approach to managing stress that is scientifically validated. In this session, Scholl will discuss the basics of mindfulness and why it should be included in every teacher’s toolbox. |

Techa Smalls-Brown Social Emotional Learning for Secondary Educators - 1 Hour
Abstract: In the secondary classroom, academics and social emotional learning must be taught in conjunction. Our secondary classrooms are spaces where students can thrive. However in today’s educational climate teachers often lack the time and resources to incorporate social and emotional learning into the curriculum. With SEL for Secondary Educators, such daily practices as creating community through the Relationship Centered Classroom and Embedding the teaching of SEL skills into academics will be explored. Teachers will walk away from this course with a tangible and realistic plan of how to integrate social emotional learning in their specific setting. The Work Before the Work: Teaching Educators the Multiple Approaches to Inner Growth and Transformation - 1 Hour Abstract: Education is a difficult profession. Teachers in classrooms today work hard to help students learn and be successful in school and in life. Passionate teachers want students to reach their highest potential. In order to meet the needs of students, teachers must cultivate various aspects of their own inner lives. The Work Before the Work involves informing educators on contemplative and inner practices they can use to help frame the work they do with students. Teachers will create their own daily practice so they can model for students and be equipped to handle all of the demands of the profession more mindfully. |
